How Acoustic Ceiling Systems Perform Over Time

Acoustic ceiling materials need to maintain their performance and appearance over the building lifecycle. Here’s what durability means for PET felt, recycled aluminium, and 3D-knitted textile systems.

A ceiling system is a medium to long-term building component. In commercial interiors, ceilings are typically expected to perform across a 15–25 year lifecycle without significant replacement. The question of durability — how the material looks and performs over that period — is therefore a relevant specification consideration, not a secondary one.

Aluminium — A Long-Life Material

Powder-coated aluminium is among the most durable materials available for interior and exterior ceiling applications. Powder-coat finishes applied to correctly prepared aluminium substrates resist scratching, fading, and impact well in commercial interior conditions. Aluminium does not corrode in standard commercial environments.

NOWN’s CircuLUM™. aluminium — containing 80% post-consumer recycled content — has the same durability characteristics as equivalent primary aluminium. Recycled content does not affect long-term performance in finished product form. Components can be cleaned with standard commercial cleaning agents without affecting the finish.

PET Felt — Performance Over Time

PET felt acoustic materials are inherently resistant to moisture, mould, and bacteria — relevant characteristics for acoustic ceiling applications in commercial environments where HVAC operation creates variable humidity conditions. Asoft™ PET felt, manufactured from 60% recycled PET content, maintains its acoustic performance over time — the fibre structure that produces sound absorption does not degrade under normal commercial use.

Colour consistency over time is a consideration for any ceiling material. Asoft™ is available in a carefully managed colour range; colour-matched replacement panels can be specified for maintenance.

3D-Knitted Textiles

InfiKnit™ textile components have a durability profile appropriate to interior ceiling and wall applications. The 3D-knitted structure is inherently stable — the geometry is built into the component, not held by surface treatment. Replacement panels are available with consistent colour and geometry, manufactured to the same specification as the original installation.

Maintenance Accessibility

Durable materials supported by accessible installation logic are the combination that produces genuinely low-maintenance ceiling systems. NOWN’s Atmosphera® open structure allows individual component replacement without disturbing the surrounding installation — a practical advantage over the lifecycle of a commercial interior.
