Powder-Coated Metal Ceiling Tiles: What Specifiers Need to Know

Powder coating is the standard finish for architectural metal ceiling tiles. It is durable, consistent, and compatible with the full RAL K5 colour range. For VEIL custom-perforated metal wall and ceiling tiles, the powder coat is applied at manufacture — to the exact RAL specified in VEIL Studio. No site finishing. No touch-up required. The panel arrives ready to install.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Electrostatically charged powder (a blend of pigment and resin) is applied to the metal surface, then cured in an oven. The heat fuses the powder into a smooth, durable film. Unlike wet paint, powder coating does not drip, sag, or produce solvent fumes. The resulting finish is thicker and harder than most liquid paint systems.

For ceiling applications, powder coating’s durability matters. A ceiling tile is an overhead surface — scuffed during installation, occasionally touched during maintenance, and expected to look consistent across its full operational life. Powder coat handles all of this without significant wear.

What does RAL K5 mean for specifiers?

RAL K5 is the standard classification system for the RAL Classic colour range — the most widely used architectural colour reference system in Europe and increasingly global. When you specify RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, the factory applies a powder coat matched precisely to that reference. The delivered panel matches the spec.

VEIL’s default is Anthracite Grey 7016 Semi-Matt. Any RAL K5 colour is available — specified in VEIL Studio before the DXF is generated. The colour is part of the panel specification, not a site decision.

What is Semi-Matt and when should you use it?

Semi-Matt describes the sheen level of the cured powder coat. A Semi-Matt finish reflects some light but is not glossy — it sits between a matt (near-zero reflection) and a satin or gloss finish. For overhead ceiling applications, Semi-Matt is generally the most appropriate choice: it reads evenly under both natural and artificial light, does not produce glare, and does not attract visible fingerprints or handling marks.

If your project requires a different sheen level, specify it in VEIL Studio. The powder coat is applied to spec. Custom. Made-to-order. The hard work happens in our factory. The simple part is yours.
