RAL Colours for Metal Ceiling Tiles: A Specifier’s Guide

Colour specification on metal ceiling tiles is often an afterthought — a choice made late in the project from a manufacturer’s standard colour card. VEIL puts colour at the beginning of the design process. In VEIL Studio, our online design tool, you pick any RAL from the full RAL K5 range before the panel is designed. The colour is part of the specification, not an add-on to it.

What is RAL K5?

RAL is a European colour matching system used across construction, manufacturing, and industrial design. RAL K5 is the standard classification system for the RAL Classic range — the most widely used RAL collection in architectural specification.

RAL K5 covers over 200 solid colours across the spectrum: from near-whites and light greys through saturated mid-tones to deep blacks, metallics, and specialty finishes. For metal ceiling tiles, RAL K5 is the most useful range because it includes the architectural neutrals that dominate commercial interior specification, while also providing access to statement colours when the project calls for them.

What is the default VEIL finish?

VEIL’s default finish is Anthracite Grey 7016, Semi-Matt. RAL 7016 is a dark, warm grey — one of the most widely specified colours in commercial ceiling applications. It reads as near-black in most lighting conditions while retaining a slightly warmer undertone than pure black.

Semi-Matt is the default sheen level. It reduces glare in overhead applications, reads consistently under both natural and artificial light, and does not attract fingerprints or surface marks in the way a high-gloss finish would. For most commercial ceiling specifications, Semi-Matt is the correct starting point.

How do you specify a colour in VEIL Studio?

VEIL Studio gives you access to the full RAL K5 range. Pick the RAL number that matches your specification. The studio applies it to the panel preview so you can assess the colour in the context of your perforation pattern before generating the DXF.

The powder coat is applied to spec in the factory — not selected from pre-painted stock. The panel you design in VEIL Studio is the panel that gets made. Custom. Made-to-order. Drawn in minutes, powder-coated in days.

Does the colour affect the acoustic or backlit options?

No. The RAL K5 powder coat is an exterior finish applied to the laser-cut steel panel. Acoustic backing (aSoft) and integrated backlighting (2700K–6000K, 25W / 45W / 65W) are independent specifications — they do not affect the colour selection and can be combined with any RAL in the range.

Specify the colour, the perforation, the acoustic performance, and the light output together in VEIL Studio. The factory receives a single, complete specification. The hard work happens in our factory. The simple part is yours.
