Drop-In Metal Ceiling Panels: A Guide for Commercial Architects

Drop-in ceiling panels are the default solution for commercial ceilings with suspended grid systems. The panel drops into the grid opening from above, rests on the grid flanges, and requires no additional fixing. For architects specifying a custom metal panel in an existing or new commercial ceiling, drop-in compatibility determines whether the specification is practical — or whether a new grid is required. VEIL drops into any standard grid. No new grid required.

What grid systems are “standard”?

Standard suspended ceiling grids in commercial construction use two primary module sizes: 600×1200mm (metric, used across Europe and international markets) and 2’×4′ or 24×48 inches (imperial, used in North America). Within each module size, there are several proprietary grid systems — DONN, Armstrong, Chicago Metallic, and others — but the panel opening dimensions are consistent across systems within the same module.

VEIL is compatible with both 600×1200 metric and 2’×4′ imperial grid systems. The 596 × 1196mm panel format is correct for both.

What does “no field modifications” mean?

Some custom ceiling panel specifications require the contractor to cut, trim, or modify the panel on site to fit the grid — because the panel was manufactured slightly oversize, or because the grid geometry required adjustment. Field modification adds time, introduces risk of damage to the panel finish, and requires skilled labour.

VEIL panels require no field modifications. The 596 × 1196mm format is manufactured to the correct clearance for a standard 600×1200 or 2’×4′ grid opening. The panel drops in. Standard mounting hardware. No cutting. No trimming. No specialist trades.

Can VEIL drop into an existing grid?

Yes. If the existing ceiling has a standard 600×1200 metric or 2’×4′ imperial grid, VEIL panels can replace existing tiles in that grid. This makes VEIL a practical option for ceiling refurbishments as well as new-build projects. Remove the existing tiles. Drop in VEIL. No structural work. No new grid rails. Built in days. Shipped in weeks. The simple part is yours.
