What Architects Should Ask Before Specifying a Ceiling System

Ceiling specification decisions affect programme, acoustics, sustainability performance, and maintenance. These are the questions worth asking before the spec is confirmed.

Ceiling systems are specified at a stage in the design process when many other decisions are still in motion. The brief may still be evolving. The services layout may not be fixed. The programme may be under pressure. In this context, the default is often to specify the familiar — a system that has been used before, on a similar project, without problems.

This is understandable. But it is not always the right decision. These are the questions that should be asked before the spec is confirmed.

1. What is the acoustic target, and does this system meet it?

NRC rating alone is not sufficient to evaluate acoustic performance. The coverage percentage, mounting geometry, and room volume all affect the delivered reverberation time. Confirm what acoustic target applies to each space type, and verify that the specified system — in the specified configuration — will achieve it.

NOWN’s Asoft™ material achieves True NRC up to 0.95. Full test data is available for specific configurations.

2. What does above-ceiling access look like?

Ceiling systems that allow services access without full disassembly simplify maintenance over the building’s life. NOWN’s Atmosphera® system is designed with removable fins and an open structure that maintains access to HVAC, lighting, AV, and fire safety systems throughout the installation and beyond.

3. How is the system manufactured and delivered?

Systems manufactured to project specification, arriving dimensioned correctly, reduce field trimming and on-site waste. This affects both programme certainty and waste management. NOWN manufactures components — in CircuLUM™ aluminium, Asoft™ PET felt, or InfiKnit™ textile — to project dimension.

4. What sustainability documentation is available?

For LEED, BREEAM, or client sustainability targets, verifiable documentation matters. NOWN products carry Declare labels, Red List Free certification, and SCS certification for recycled content. These are available at the point of specification.

5. What is the maintenance requirement?

Ceiling systems in commercial environments need to be maintainable over a 15–25 year building lifecycle. Understand replacement part availability, cleaning compatibility, and colour consistency over time before confirming specification.
